Team Sustainability Check-In

Matthew Grimsley (Chef):
– Collaborating with Cisco on sustainable packaging and signage.
– Addressed fairness concerns around fees for to-go containers.
– Training staff to avoid offering disposables by default.

Allison Marriner:
– Reseeding disturbed areas along the Max lift line.
– Preparing for winter fuel efficiency and idle time analysis.

Kenzie Schlangen:
– Updating meeting notes on the team site.

Daniel Valois:
– Managing ongoing e-waste collection.
– Preparing for Hood River hazardous waste event (August 8).

Jezrai Hower:
– Developing ‘idling mindfully’ dash decals with Jeremy Evans.
– Promoting vehicle awareness and maintenance.

Heidi Logosz:
– Attended Senator Wyden’s town hall on public land sales.
– Advocated for sharing utility and waste cost data to encourage conservation.

Mission, Vision & Goals Refinement

Draft Vision Statement

To create a mountain experience where sustainability is foundational in our decision-making and a part of every experience, by inspiring our guests and team to recreate, learn, and minimize our environmental impact. We aim to lead the industry in how environmental responsibility can protect our Mountain Home for generations to come.

Draft Mission Statement

We’re here to protect our Mountain Home, shrink our footprint, and inspire guests, team, and community to be part of the solution. Our mission is to integrate sustainability into everything we do—from how we run the resort to how we treat the planet.

Discussion Highlights:
– Replaced vague terms like ‘impactful’ and ‘epic’ with more meaningful language.
– Agreed to merge fun and professional tones for broader appeal.
– Final draft to be circulated for feedback.

Goals & Initiatives

Employee Engagement Program:
– Develop department-specific sustainability training via Illumi.
– Share metrics (e.g., electricity usage, waste costs) to motivate behavior change.

Sustainable Slopes Badges:
– Continue progress on NSAA badge program.
– Use criteria to guide departmental sustainability improvements.

Marketing Collaboration:
– Revise messaging for reverse ATMs, EV charging stations, and recycling signage.
– Simplify and clarify mixed recycling and garbage decals.

Climate Challenge Reporting:
– Resume annual carbon emissions tracking and goal-setting.
– Share progress transparently with staff.

Litter Collection Event:
– ~150 participants collected 444 lbs of litter.
– Lower total than last year, possibly due to prior cleanup or reduced litter.
– Suggestions for future: departmental litter challenges, expanded collection zones.

Recognition

– Chef’s Team: For managing food service during the Solve litter event.
– Electricians (Woody, Colin, Zach): For organizing scrap metal from lighting upgrades.
– Park Crew: For separating aluminum and steel for recycling.
– Owen Carney: For proactively collecting e-waste from office staff.
– Solve Volunteers: For helping clean up the mountain.
– Greg Pack: Recognized for leadership and support of sustainability efforts.

Next Steps

– Finalize mission/vision/goals draft and circulate for feedback.
– Continue departmental sustainability training planning.

– Explore shuttle options for future litter events to improve coverage.
