Mt. Hood Meadows / Cooper Spur Team Check-in Survey

I come up with my family frequently and so we base ourselves in the public areas (near Schuss Grill and Fresh Tracks) to change, eat lunch, and etc. We see many guests ignore the signs about not bringing equipment into these areas and so we've seen some very unsafe situations because of it. Skis and snowboards leaned against the walls and tables tend to get knocked over and crash down on tables, against windows, and worst of all, onto guests. I don't think we need to be overly strict about enforcement but a friendly reminder here and there from staff would go a long way toward creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for all of our guests. Thank you!

Management Response

Yes I agree. It's an education opportunity to let guests know the rules and why. People don't read signs and as well don't think this applies to them. As a team member we should all be responsible about letting guests know. If they argue or disregard us, or refuse our request, then DPS can take over - that's their role.

I tend to use an educational approach, "Hey there, did you know we don't allow equipment on this level for safety reasons? You are welcome to store your skis or snowboard at our secure Equipment Check or you can use any of the free racks outside. Thanks for helping us keep this area safe for everyone." -Tyler Barnes, Learning Center Operations Manager

I was surprised to learn about the employee ski check policy change. According to the ski check attendant, only uniformed employees can use the employee ski check. Non-uniformed employees have to use the public ski check. What is the logic behind this? Most uniformed employees are actually on-the-clock as we aren’t allowed to freee ski/ride in uniform. If the employee ski check was full and uniformed employees were being denied access, I could understand. I hope management will reconsider this policy or at least explain the logic behind it.

Management Response

This has always been the policy. How does the Equipment Check team member know you are an employee when you're out of uniform? I certainly want all our team member's gear to be secured when they choose it to be, but if you're out of uniform then you look like any other guest. When out of uniform you are welcome to use the guest gear check for free, they just need to scan your pass. Thanks for your comment. -Tyler Barnes, Learning Center Operations Manager

It has been my experience that an employee who does their job well is generally compensated with an annual raise. I have noticed small increases in my wage over the years but I would consider them to be on par with a "cost of living" adjustment or an effort to align with the increased minimum wage. Those adjustments are appreciated but having not received a legitimate pay increase based on my commitment to the company and merit is a real morale killer. The bonuses are amazing but not always a sure deal, while knowing my hourly pay is going to get a consistent bump if I keep up the good work is very motivating. The reason I'm writing this here rather than speaking directly to my Manager (I'll do that too) is because I doubt I'm the only one in the company who has experienced this. If I am, then I guess I'm missing something. I love it up here and want to stick around for the long haul but I came in to this position with expectations based on experience with previous employers who were giving me $2-$5 an hour raises each year where as here, they hit under the $.50 an hour range. I love working on this mountain and I'm not here because the pay is great but I had hoped to be able to build a career at Mt Hood Meadows and work hard to improve the pay through merit increases.

Reflecting on 2018, I've learned a lot. We've accomplished a lot. I always feel supported and listened to at Meadows. Thanks for being awesome!

Management Response

Thanks for mentioning that, it can be easy to focus too much on the things you want to improve and not see all the positive changes that have happened. I agree with you there have been a lot of positive changes thanks to everyone's hard work.

Would like to see the adjustment to the supervisor meal cap actually go into effect. We're still being fully capped at 25 dollars without the alleged 50% off being applied to further purchases. According to the email we received this was supposed to take effect once the Christmas discount limit increase ended but it hasn't.
If/when this gets fixed please send us an email so we know it's safe to order a second meal without worrying about ending up paying full price for an expensive side of fries.
Thank you.

Management Response

Someone brought this directly to Jeremy and me, and it should now be fixed. - Matt Troskey
