Hiking for Turns - Winter is Coming
We are expecting some snow this weekend and into next week. This may bring enthusiasts up for their first turns of the season.
We are in the transition period from summer/fall maintenance and projects to active ski season preparations and set up. Please convey the following message to all those arriving to hike for turns.
Up until the time we begin active set-up for winter operations (beyond the Buttercup/ER/Daisy terrain) i.e. track-packing/grooming, ramp building, chair seat installation, avalanche mitigation efforts, running rope/closures, tower-pads, etc. we will not enforce our restricted up-hill travel policy that is in place throughout the winter. Please make sure that you let anyone you encounter know the following information:
- There is currently no patrol or other assistance available.
- There is no hazard marking (low snow conditions create unexpected and barely visible hazards).
- Be aware of and stay clear of snow harvesting activities in the base area and parking lots
- Visitors are on their own and we strongly encourage that they go elsewhere.
- As always, sledding is not allowed (there are many other areas on Mt. Hood that accommodate that activity).
Once we transition to set-up (beyond the Buttercup/ER/Daisy terrain) we will enforce our restricted up-hill travel policy (with the exception of our two designated routes for accessing the backcountry). During this period we are actively working to get the hill ready for our guests. Once this begins, for everyone’s safety (both our employees and guests), we ask that visitors respect our policy and go elsewhere for their turns.
It is much easier when these visitors know our expectations before they leave the parking lot with their gear. If you see folks arriving for winter recreation please make an effort to contact them as soon as they arrive.
I will send out a reminder email once we make that transition.
Please contact VP of Mountain Operations, Mel Toney, with any questions.
