Mt. Hood Meadows / Cooper Spur Team Check-in Survey

Wearing a flannel or hoodie should be allowed as uniform if wearing a nametag. The type of work we do requires long and short periods of hard work, many times forcing team members to get overheated wearing the uniform. If they wear a flannel it can get wet but stay warm to body heat. If they wear a hoodie they can dry it quickly in the dryers and be warm and dry. Finding other materials that fit the same bill in terms of effective coverage pushes people to spend more money on often times less effective materials.

We need a stainless steel sink basin. We would love to be sustainable and get it second hand, but the current plastic sink doesn't drain well, and is an infamous source of sickness. If we had something that was easier and more effective to clean we could potentially keep our department cleaner, and have less people get sick.

Our equipment keeps being taken from the lifts. It does not seem to be an exclusively internal problem because we often find our tools being used by other departments. This puts people in positions where they have to use the wrong tools for certain tasks, and strains on our budget. It's frustrating hearing about how tight our budget is and feeling like other departments can't appreciate what it's like to have such a strict allowance in a non-money making department.

It would be nice if our access leads and the new access control or guest services employees could cross train at the lifts. In years past we have been forced to do this due to short staffing and it resulted in some of the best access reports we have ever seen and our guests were always impressed. Access issues are the most frequent negative interaction with the guest and it puts them in incredibly awkward and defensive positions to have these frequent interactions.

Management Response

In response to the equipment going missing at lifts, I brought this up in the weekly mountain meeting and am actively trying to locate our missing gear. I am also working on labeling our gear very clearly so that if our stuff goes missing, it should be easy to find. I am totally ok with sharing our gear anytime, I just ask that it ends up back with us. Our gear will be clearly labeled as Lifts Ops along with yellow paint or tape.

In response to hoodies. We have been given brand new uniforms and I ask that everyone wear them. We were able to give input the last two seasons as we searched for a MHM uniform partner and a lot of effort, money and care was taken to make a decision that was best for everyone. Because this is brought up weekly, I will talk with HR to see what we might be able to do; Lift Ops was one of the first to receive new uniforms and there are still departments that haven't so anything new for us likely won't happen for another year.

I am addressing all of the Access Control comments at once with this response. Many people with good intentions pitched into developing this program. Most any attempt at improvement goes through a learning phase and with that comes the need to adapt to daily problems. We are all one team and associating blame to anyone for these pass issues is unfair; ask "is what I'm doing helping" to borrow a phrase from orientation. Once the office has a puck they will be able to keep people from having to go inside for the NO PRODUCT issues which should greatly improve our guest service abilities. This program has my full support and I will continue to work in tandem with the Access Control department to make sure that we are enriching the lives of both our team and our guests. I ask that you continue to be patient and solution minded while we find out what works best for everyone, thank you.

In response to the Lift Ops Building. Yes, we share a small space and I know that is difficult. We have 160+ people sharing a space that was meant for a lot less. On a daily basis I am personally wiping our surfaces with Clorox wipes to keep the risk of sickness low, I am cleaning garbage off the floors, putting peoples stuff away for them. I have been talking about this in the morning meetings as this is everyone's job, not just the supervisors. There are Clorox wipes, brooms, spray bottles, sponges and other items in the building so everyone can pitch in to keep Our Mountain Home germ free. As far as the stainless steel sink goes, I agree 100%. This will most likely have to be a summer project - I am working on a proposal that would also make more space for our team. In the interim, please help keep the space that we have clean, tidy and functional. You have presented great ideas and I will work on making them a reality in coming seasons.

The radio traffic on ch.1 is getting out of control, its becoming unprofessional and harder for us to get the info we need, what happened to keeping the channel clear when a lift is 10-60?

Management Response

Lift Access has moved over to channel 7 so hopefully that will help.

Please quit over cooking my burger. Yuck, no one likes a hockey puck.

I don't know why but it has always bugged me seeing guests ski past the north side into and across the parking lot, in spite of the sign. Perhaps having the parking lot crew lay down about 3 widths of gravel may discourage it. Or a public safety officer out there 11:30 -1:00 and 3:30- 4:30. Is there a civil fine for this, in addition to passes pulled?

Management Response

Signs don't stop people from doing dumb stuff I agree. Anytime the parking lot is white I see people sliding to their cars. You can't fix ___________ . Out of the many guests that do follow the rules, there are always a small percentage that think that those rules don't apply to them. I do think that several hand fulls of gravel at the bottom of the slope that leads to the parking lot there would be the least time consuming and most practical to implement. -Tyler Barnes, Learning Center Operations Manager

It would be nice to include some info on the Nordic center operations in the emails out to the general public about what all is going on, on the mountain.

Management Response

I believe the Nordic Center is regularly promoted through our Enews and other channels. We are certainly open if there are specific things that we should change on how it's promoted.

The feeling of this year is one of hostility, being unwelcome, and that the seasonal worker are a thieving nuisance.

From the first day of operations there have been to many instances to count of being made to feel as if I/we are unwelcome. Unfortunately a large portion of that have been from our management team. This unwelcomeing thread has filtered brown through all leaves and departments.
I've been fortunate enough to get a day at meadows with out work and able to use the area as a costumer. Unfortunately those days had me feeling that if I had to pay to ride there I would not come back. From know one knowing what's going on, totally unfriendly interactions, and horrible dining experiences.
The food this year's is awful. And has already made me unable to perform my duties due to the backlash of eating the food. Unfortunately when geust asking where to eat I do not have a suggestion for them.
Someone might say tell someone what you see. That is a good thought, the standard reply is "well that's how that person's is, o well". And my response in my head is, how bad do they treat our geust and what about our "core values".

Management Response

Sorry to hear that, if you feel you are being treated that way it is probably something to discuss with your Manager, Director, VP or HR. From my perspective the food especially in the Quick Serve areas has been greatly improved this season. If for some reason eating it is making your unable to perform your duties I'd suggest bringing a sack lunch.
